Wall Street’s attention will be at least temporarily drawn away from trade wars and back to monetary policy tonight with the release of the March US jobs numbers. The focus will not be on the headline jobs number per se, as was the case in the past, but on wage growth, and thus inflation implications.
The unemployment rate could possibly fall to a number starting with 3. This, too, is no longer a particularly important number when compared to the more telling underemployment rate.
Inflation will continue to be in focus in the US next week with the release of the March CPI, and with the release of the minutes of the last Fed meeting, both due on Wednesday.
Inflation numbers will also be released by China next week, along with trade data.
Australia will see the NAB business and Westpac consumer confidence surveys and housing finance numbers.
The RBA governor will speak on Wednesday, revelling in a job he’s been recently given in which one never has to do anything.
On the local stock front, Bank of Queensland ((BOQ)) will report earnings and Insurance Australia Group ((IAG)) will host an investor day. Westfield ((WFD)) and Cimic ((CIM)) will hold AGMs.
We’re not done with ex-divs quite yet, but next week’s only real highlight is Adairs ((ADH)).
