There is glimmer of hope on the US-China trade front – yet another, with none yet to covert to anything positive – as we head into next week. But this latest invitation is as yet only that, and is weeks away, and in the meantime they keep telling us there’ll be a breakthrough with Canada any day and also with the EU.

But all we ever get is “talks ongoing”. So don’t hold your breath.

US economic data next week include housing sentiment and starts, existing home sales, the Empire State and Philly Fed indices and a flash estimate of September PMI. Japan and the eurozone will also flash.

Japan is closed on Monday. The Bank of Japan is the next cab off the monetary policy rank next week.

A quiet week for Australian data is highlighted only by June quarter house price numbers and the minutes of the August RBA meeting.

On the local stock front, TPG Telecom ((TPM)) and Synlait Milk ((SM1)) release earnings reports while Sydney Airport provides monthly traffic numbers, Navitas ((NVT)) hosts an investor day and Suncorp ((SUN)) holds its AGM.

The flow of ex-dividends continues into next week but the daily lists are getting shorter and the number of big names within is also diminishing. We can nevertheless look out for Cochlear ((COH)), Qube Holdings ((QUB)), Webjet ((WEB)), Automotive Holdings ((AHG)) and Crown Resorts ((CWN)), among others.
