Never before has one country’s unique healthcare reform bill been so vital to the near term direction of global markets. The wider implications of Trump’s ability to get his bill through Congress expediently, or to be faced with a lengthy period of required negotiation with dissenting Republican Congress members, will be the predominant focus of next week.

It is unlikely a vote will be forthcoming by this week’s end as it appears Trump does not yet have the numbers.

Wall Street will no doubt remain in a holding pattern until more is known, and direction from here will be determined by the outcome of the initial vote, whenever that is to occur. In the meantime, there is a raft of US economic data due out next week to at least draw some attention.

Releases include pending home sales and house prices, consumer confidence, the Richmond Fed index and the Chicago PMI. December quarter GDP will again be revised but that’s getting a bit long in the tooth. More relevant will be Friday’s release of personal income & spending numbers, which includes the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation, the PCE.

A strong read here will fire up rate rise speculation once more.

In Australia the focus will be on housing finance data due on Friday. Slowing the housing investment bubble is the topic du jour.

Bank of Queensland ((BOQ)) will report earnings next week and there remains a handful of ex-dividends to work through.
